Moda LOVE Blog Tour

Welcome to the LOVE tour!  This is Moda's annual September blog hop featuring all of their designers and today is the French General day!

We are excited to launch our upcoming collection, Rue Indienne... in stores any day now!  Here is a sneak peek at our collection of patterns for Rue Indienne, designed and sewn by our fabulous quilting team, including Penny, Cheryl, Deb and Kim...

When did you fall in LOVE with quilting/ textiles?

I fell in love with textiles first!  Twenty years ago, I was traveling in the South of France and started seeing the linen sheets and old linen floral curtain panels at the flea markets.  There were piles of old fabric - and I started buying as much as I could carry back to the car. I had no idea that textiles would change my life forever and lead me down a path of collecting 18th and 19th century fabric that would eventually become the basis for our fabric collection with Moda.

Last year I worked on Michele Muska's new book, Quilting the New Classics, and was determined to learn to quilt!  I started with a sampler quilt but got hung up on the flying geese block!  Then I tried a jelly roll quilt and found that I could piece with my eyes closed...well almost!  I haven't quilted anything since but I assure you, I have a garage full of fabric and someday, someday, I will be quilting in my spare time!

 What fuels you to create?

Besides inventing new Jelly Belly combinations, (which is the fastest way to make me feel sick - but I still love it!) my creativity is fueled by color, texture and anything old and used.  When I feel totally depleted and lacking of any inspiration, I find myself going back to my collection of old quilts and fabric and I always seem to find something I had missed...a small repair or stitched initials or an additional fabric hidden under an old quilt...it's these little details that feed me and inspire me.

What is the best part of your design process?

The best part of my design process is working with the people I work with...my husband JZ, the great staff at FG, the design team at Moda and the friends I have made in the quilting industry.  I never imagined I would become part of such a creative group...and I love it!

I LOVE the color......

I think we all know my favorite color...it starts with an R and ends with a D!

When I teach classes or workshops, I LOVE.....

Learning something new from my students!  I have taught our Indigo Workshop dozens of times, but I still love it when a student comes up with a new design technique or dyes a fabric that makes the indigo look totally modern and fresh...there is always something new to learn and teaching workshops is the best way to learn!

This project features a layer cake, charm pack or mini charm, but what is your all time favorite moda precut?

My all time favorite precut is the mini charm!  We are working on our upcoming 2015 Mini Charm Monthly Club which will feature a mini charm and a monthly project...thanks to one of my favorite quilters and FG employee, Amy!  More details to come in December!

Here is the pattern for the layer cake quilt from Moda:

And finally....leave us a note about what you LOVE about quilting...we will pick a handful of winners and send out some of our new Rue Indienne precuts!  Merci!

  28. Oh my gosh, I love everything about quilting. I guess my least favorite part of quilting is when you get 3/4 the way through a quilt and you want to be done because you've already started planning the next quilt. It's sometimes hard to keep the drive to finish the first quilt, when there is a beguiling new quilt just waiting for you.

    ReplyDelete

  66. Moda Jelly Rolls just seems to work for me. It is so easy to work with and the cutting is just the right size for me. The feeling you get when you start with a piece of fabric and the ending result is what you have made yourself. It is quite the accomplishment. Thank you for being a part of the Moda Love Blog Hop and giving all of us the chance to become a Moda Winner. Yes, I also adore the color of Red myself. It is such a bold and striking color.

  83. The joy of handing someone a quilt they were not expecting is priceless and that is what I love the most.

    ReplyDelete
  84. What I love most about quilting is the challenge in completing a quilt I am proud of. I am a perfectionist so that can really drive me crazy in trying to make THE perfect quilt. I realize there are probably very few perfect quilts and I'm fairly sure mine are not going to be in that category, so each quilt is also teaching me to let go of the perfectionist part of me so I can just have fun. Fun and relaxation is why I decided to learn to quilt in the first place. Well, that and to have a reason to collect gorgeous fabrics. LOL

And your new fabric collection, Rue Indienne looks just gorgeous.

I can't wait to see more about this new club you wrote about. I recently purchased a lot of mini charms.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I love when my quilt-in-progress starts to FEEL like a quilt. In other words, once the finished top has been sandwiched with backing and batting, and I get all touchy-feely with it as I am quilting. (I love your Rue Indienne collection so so much! I honestly think it's my all-time favorite!)

  125. I wonder if I would have noticed the textiles, had I been in your spot all those years ago. I have always loved fabrics, and I'd like to think that I would have noticed them, too! I love STARTING projects. That's when I get to see a new pattern or play with a new fabric - even it's an old fabric taken from the stash - I have many, many starts. It's the finishing that gives me difficulty!

  130. I love choosing patterns and fabrics and pondering the best use of color for different places. I love watching the pieces I've cut begin to form a design as they are stitched together. And I love the hand quilting process. Each tiny stitch is therapeutic. And nothing is quite as fun as flipping the quilt over and seeing all the stitches on the back! There's no part of quilting I don't love.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I love color period! Some days it's red, some days it's blue. But I do know that I always love French General!! It has been one of my favorite line for a few years now. I found some inspiring quilts on your blog today!

  135. I'm a fabric/textile lover. When I am working with fabric, I have a lot of energy and focus. Diane Ackerman calls it Deep Play:

Children are of course drawn to deep play--those activities that catapult them into an altered state of consciousness, where all their senses are engaged and for that moment life is timeless and fully absorbing. But few adults are conscious of how this form of deep play continues throughout adulthood.

    ReplyDelete
  136. What I love about quilting is the knowledge that I'm making a family heirloom :) I love the warmth and nostalgia of the art. homespunhandmaiden(at)yahoo(dot)com

  138. In think that the thing I love most is choosing the fabrics. All that potential about to be realised (possibly).

Your lovely new line reminds me of some chintzes I saw at the Victoria and Albert Museum a couple of years ago. They are so deep and rich - very 18th C India.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I love stitching by hand - applique, hand quilting, EPP - I love it! Your new line looks beautiful! I would love to win some!!

  140. I love just about everything about quilting. But cutting not so much, but most of that is just because I have tendinitis in both wrists and hands.
My favorite part is giving a quilt as a gift, because I love the looks of amazement on faces. I love red a lot, because of fire truck red with my firefighter hubby, but I love the blues of your Lexington line, and purple is my most loved color.

I was introduced to your fabrics by doing a block of the month from Bunny Hill. I had always loved bright colors till I saw your fabrics. I would love to add them to my stash till I found the perfect pattern for them. Carol

  144. I love picking fabrics....seeing all the pretty designs and colors...oh my! I also love cutting them out (which is odd, I hear) and I really love piecing the tops...I usually hit a road block at the quilting phase..because I get distracted with the next set of lovely fabrics.

I also love color and fabric, so collecting fabric is the easy part of quilting.

  148. I like the creating process, the piecing is my favorite. I take fabrics that you and other designers have made and create that pattern just for me. It is wonderful and rewarding. I can say, "I made this!" jlblvn at gmail dot com

The thing I love best about quilting is all the great life-long friends I've made. I started quilting one day a week with two friends when our kids started school. That was nearly 35 years ago and we're still quilting together!
