French General will be open from 11-4pm and celebrating all things French!  Stop by to see the beautiful linen sheets we brought back, or pick up a Bakelite needle case for your stitching basket!  Croissants and Lillet served all day!

If you have been thinking of joining us for our France Getaway  - now is the time to let us know!  Our weeks sell out very quickly - so the best way to ensure your spot in France is to sign up on our early bird list.
Join us for a week in France. Spend a week in the rural part of the south of France and visit the flea markets, the farmer's markets and local artisans.  Our weeks are filled with creative women from all over the world who come to relax, learn and create. Our wonderful friend and chef, Charlotte, will join us and share her passion for local food and wine.

Join us in Houston at the International Quilt Market where we will be introducing our new collection, Jardin de Versaille, as well as teaching two workshops.

Boro Patchwork Linen Tote Workshop
Monday October 30th 9am - noon
Using French General's collection of antique fabric scraps from the 19th and 20th centuries, hand piece a patchwork square and learn the art of Sashiko - a Japanese hand stitching/quilting technique. Once the patchwork is completed, students will stitch their patchwork to a linen tote, perfect for a traveling sewing bag. All materials are provided for this workshop.
 

Artistic Weaving Workshop
Monday October 30th 2-5pm
Using a modern tapestry loom, learn to warp the loom and then weave the weft. Instruction will include simple weaving techniques as well as rya, soumak and shape weaving. The yarns can be used to "paint" a picture across the supporting warp threads. Kaari will bring a selection of fibers to experiment with, as well as the traditional yarns.  All materials, including looms, are provided for this workshop.

The French Embroidery Hoop Project has finally come full circle! 
Now available in 3 sizes:
4" is a very sweet little French Hoop which doesn't cover a lot of ground but makes a beautiful frame for finished work.
6" is the classic size and the best French Hoop to start with.  Once you have mastered this hoop you will be ready for the next size up.
8" is a challenging French Hoop to get on to your fabric because of the size - but hey - some like them big!
U P C O M I N G   W O R K S H O P S
Creative Cyanotype
Sunday, September 10th 
Join Tyn Atol as she teaches you to explore, learn and play with the process of cyanotype.  Developed in 1840 to mostly make copies, and used to create beautiful art pieces.  Students will learn the process, and have ample opportunity to print and try various techniques to create different color tones.
Los Angeles Downtown Dig
Tuesday, September 5th or Monday, November 6th  
Join French General for a day of digging for treasures in downtown Los Angeles!  We will go hunting for beads, baubles, buttons, fabric and inspiration!  Meet at French General for a petit dejeuner and then drive downtown (less than 10 minutes away) where we will spend the morning at some of our favorite fabric, bead, and old millinery shops. Lunch at the Ace Hotel, one of our favorite downtown restaurants, and then more digging for gold! 
The Fine Art of Paper Flowers by Tiffanie Turner
Saturday, September 16th  1:30-3pm
Tiffanie Turner will be teaching two workshops at French General on Saturday and in between workshops will be signing copies of her new book, The Fine Art of Paper Flowers. Please join us!

Petite Theatre with Molly Meng
Saturday, October 7th

Join us in the construction of your very own petite theatre.  Learn the art of creating a small scene, framed within a vintage wood backdrop and your own special story to tell. Beginning with hand-crafted recycled-wood boxes, we will create our individual stories using vintage ephemera, photos and fabric.

Concertina Book with Molly Meng
Sunday, October 8th

A fantastic way to display your keepsakes:  have it standing up to show off your artwork, hanging on a wall, or lay it down and let the pages tell a story in themselves.

In this class you'll be creating a hard-backed, accordion-style book.  You'll learn how to construct the book and it's pages, as well as advanced elements of collage for an ongoing themed-book.  You'll have all the juicy ephemera, vintage photos, and stamping materials you can fit and, as always, I suggest for your own personal touch bring something that is uniquely yours to incorporate!

Embroidered US Wall Map with Robert Mahar
Saturday, November 11th
Celebrate your home state, commemorate a recent road trip or stitch connections between you and your loved ones.  We’ll explore all of the ways you can embroider your adventures in the “Lower 48” as we embellish a beautiful 1906 map of the contiguous United States custom printed on a half yard (27” x 36”) of cotton linen canvas.  

We are happy to announce that

French General is now open Fridays and Saturdays from 11-4pm.
