Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Today is the kick-off day for the Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway!  This has been a long time coming...and I'm excited to start the blog hop on day one, along with Edyta of Laundry Basket Quilts and Brigitte of Zen Chic!

Our latest collection for Fall 2013, Josephine, is coming soon!  Filled with our deep reds and pinks, rich browns, and naturals, the Josephine Collection is inspired by Napoleon's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais.  The first Empress of France was a lover of all things botanical and kept a rose garden at Chateau de Malmaison that rivaled the best English gardens of the time.  For our Josephine Collection, we included beautiful old florals as well as fantasy florals and small petite prints - perfect for mixing into a quilt!

Last Spring,  Lissa Alexander, Moda's master marketing gal, asked each of the Moda designers to chose a block to create.  At the Moda Schoolhouse, we each stood up and presented our block, along with a story of how the block fit into the chosen theme: Size Matters.  I took the theme quite literally...I made my block bigger....

and better.....

When I stood up to present my block, I told everyone I really thought that the point of the project was to make our block bigger - and better!  Little did I realize that everyone else had a block that was actually useable...6x6, 8x8 or even 12x12.  Oh well, my block was designed to be turned into a portable picnic blanket - complete with tie - so you can wear it over your shoulder as you walk to your perfect spot to picnic!  That's Molly's Stella up there sitting on the blanket...she's always ready to picnic!

Download Instructions For Our Block Here

We've also designed a beautiful, large Flying Geese inspired quilt with our new collection, Josephine.  Designed by myself and JZ, sewn by the talented Penny Tucker, and quilted by Cheryl Yamamoto...this quilt, as well as all of our quilts, is truly a team effort.  As many of you know, designing quilts has not come easy to me...but this quilt seemed to flow...I loved the combination of the classic style and the ability to show off the fabric at the same time.

Order the Josephine Quilt Pattern Here

Over the years six years of designing fabric for Moda, I have learned that size really does matter!  Once I settle on a theme for a collection, I go digging in my fabric archives for inspiration.  I look for a couple of large scale prints, a few mediums and a handful of small, or ditsy prints.  Being fairly new to the quilt business, I have learned how important the variety of scale is.  Too many large prints and there is not enough depth or diversity - too many small prints and the design of the quilt can begin to lose itself.  I am so thankful for friends and teachers that have helped me learn this along the way....it's been an important tool for me while designing collections and the accompanying quilts.

Thanks to Moda, I have a handful of giveaways to accompany this blog hop, as well as some cute Josephine Hankies, so go ahead and leave me a comment about your favorite size quilt to sew...is it a lap quilt, a baby quilt or something larger?  Sofia will choose the lucky winners within the week and we will send out some prizes! Thanks for playing along and hope to see some of you in Houston!

Of course size matters - somewhere in blogland I saw a huge churn dash quilt!
My favourite size to make is lap!

llavmc said...

I love your BIG block! My favorite size is a lap quilt. It's much easier to quilt on my little machine.

Margaret said...

I'm better at finishing lap size quilts if I'm hand quilting. But I like bigger quilts in general.

Connie Thomas said...

I just love a baby quilt. Just knowing that it will be cherised for years to come. Thanks for the hop.

Kitten said...

I like to make all sizes of quilts, but most of the ones I've made over the years are lap quilts or wall quilts. I love your BIG quilt...it is spectacular! Right now I'm working on hand piecing a queen size Grandmother's Flower Garden...I hope to finish it over the winter. Thanks for the links to the blog hop.

Deb said...

I honestly don't have a favorite size - I like lap quilts and bed sized quilts. In fact, I usually tend to go towards the full size quilts. I guess I like them the bigger the better. Love your block too and new fabric line.

Tricia said...

I love a large lap quilt, nothing better than snuggling on the couch under your favorite quilt!

Denise said...

I guess my favorite size is basically a twin, but I call them 'couch quilts'. Perfect for the Sunday afternoon paper, football game and snooze on the couch.

karen @ badlandsquilts said...

My favorite size quilt is a twin/large throw...perfect for the couch during our Minnesota winters.

Jacklynn said...

My favorite size is a lap quilt - very useful for anyone up here in Wisconsin to cuddle under in the winter. Thanks for the give away!

DebrafromMD said...

I make quilts in all sizes - from preemie quilts up to queen size. I don't make king size quilts, nope, not happening.

Maureeneh said...

I enjoy making different sizes of quilts. I like wall hangings for small spaces, lap quilts to cuddle under while reading and lovely large bed quilts to sleep under.

Andrea said...

I like to make all sizes up to king.

KallieKY said...

I've always made huge quilts but as I get colder and my husband gets warmer I find I like a smaller, lap or couch size that I can layer on top of just my side of the bed at night :)

Mary Caldwell said...

Your big block is gorgeous. I make all different size quilts, but prefer throw size quilts for cuddling up on the couch, plus they're easier to quilt myself. Thanks for the giveaway.

Linda said...

Love your picnic quilt block. My favorite quilt size is 60" x 60" as I always have a quilt that size hanging on my living room wall. They get changed for the seasons or events.

kay said...

I tend to make a lot of table toppers, but I still get the most satisfaction from finishing bed-size quilts.

Tanya said...

What a great idea to expand a block to a larger size.

What a great idea to expand a block to a larger size.

I like working on lap quilts. Though soon, I want to do bed size quilts for all my kids and grandkids. Thank you for the chance to win.

Wendy said...

My favorite size tends to be around 34 - 36" square -- a table top size. I have a bookcase built by my husband with a spot for displaying that size of quilt.

Mary in VA said...

Too funny!

Rhonda said...

My favorite is a lap-size quilt - they're small enough that they can be a quick project but they're big enough to snuggle in!

debra said...

My first choice are bed quilts queen and bigger, but I do like during holidays to do banners or table tops thanks for the chance to win

Beth said...

I like doing smaller quilts like baby or lap size. I have found that as I get older my attention span gets shorter. In making smaller items I can finish them & that makes me feel good. Thanks for sharing and the chance to win.

mama dub said...

My favorite size quilts to make would be a wall hanging to lap size. They are easier to finish and fun to make.. I love changing quilts out for each season and holiday.

Jeanie said...

I like a smaller quilt, lap size or even smaller, so that I can quilt it myself without too many headaches. Love your big block as it's a great way to highlight those fabrics that you hate to cut up into itty bitty pieces. Thanks for the giveaway!

Janet said...

What a great picnic blanket! My favorite size quilt to make is lap sized. It goes together fairly fast but you can still wrap yourself up in it or take a nap under it :0)

Michele said...

I love everyone of your lines...they just keep getting better! Thanks for sharing with us!

Laura Pendley said...

MY favorite is the lap, because I use this size the most. What could be better than using or seeing someone use the quilt you have sewn with such love and care.

Vicki H said...

I like making a throw size quilt, great for snuggling on the couch with while watching tv or reading a good book.

Jean said...

I love your giant block! Most of my quilts are large lap or double bed size, or smaller things like table runners. And i love quilts that go together quickly, so your block fits the bill! Thanks you for the chance to win some goodies.

Kristy said...

Very cute "big" quilt! I love stars! Thanks for sharing all the sizes with us. I like lap quilts the best. Easier to quilt on my domestic machine. But I am quilting a twin size right now. So it can be done! Thanks again- K-

Debbie said...

I love you you thought "outside the box" and went bigger with your block. I love making smaller quilts that can be finished up in a short amount of time. So baby quilts, wall hangings, and tablerunners are my favorites. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

Tina said...

I love quilts that I can put on my bed and use - our wall space is limited and I think quilts looks just wonderful, like beautiful artwork, when they are displayed on a bed.

Miss Jean said...

I usually make lap size quilts and have one cut out in - French General fabric!!!!!

I love making wall quilts and crib quilts the most. They easily fit under my home sewing machine to quilt the top. Thank you for the wonderful give-aways!

bptor1092 said...

I try to have the size of my quilt be large enough to wrap the recipient. And since I have some large friends and family (many over 6'6'") I have some work on my hands. Lots of love to stitch.

Judy Balek said...

I do like your idea of large. I need to keep it in mind when making a baby quilt for my nieces, I have lots of them. The one large block would be a fun way to go.

Egg's bits and bobbins said...

I love making quilts that are more usable best, single bed size and up, you definitely feel more proud of them, right up until I get to quilting them, and then I remember all the back ache involved with trying to quilt something that heavy. So as I'm right in the middle of quilting a large quilt at the mo, I would say cot sized all the way.

Anonymous said...

the fabrics are lovely.

Lisa Stack said...

I make bed-sized quilts the most, so I guess that means I think the bigger the better!

Jennifer said...

My favorite size quilt to make is baby/crib size. Anything larger than that and I lose interest very quickly and into the UFO pile it goes!

Tammy said...

I like to make bed sized quilts but also enjoy makeing lots of baby quilts for gifts.

Starla P said...

I like to make larger sized quilts. I figure if I put that much time and effort into making one, it better be big enough to be appreciated!

My favorite is twin size. I have to get some "Josephine"! It's my middle name and my mothers name.

Kathleen OGrady said...

I am fairly new to quilting and have recently discovered French General and have fallen totally in love with your fabric collections. I love the rich colors and beautiful prints. I just wish I would have started quilting a few years back and could get past collections. I am looking forward to Josephine, just ordered a bundle from FQS, yeah! I like making bigger quilts that more than one person can snuggle in.

Anonymous said...

What a great idea for a blog hop. I LOVE you fabric collections. I am always eager when you come out with a new one and have to run out and at least get a precut if not more. Keep up the great work

Connie said...

Your big block picnic quilt is gorgeous! I absolutely love it. What size quilt to I like to sew most? It's a toss-up between baby quilts and lap quilts. I love to give a personal lap quilt, but there is just something that captures my heart about baby fabrics.

Anonymous said...

My favorite size quilt is every one!!! So many inspirations out there to last a lifetime!

CJ said...

Oh my what a big block you made. My favorite size is wall hanging. This varies as to what space I have available, some are larger and some are very small. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Potpourri said...

I am partial to lap and baby quilts,

Janet said...

My favorite size is a lap quilt, altho there's a lot to be said for small quilts, too - you can use tiny blocks and not drive yourself crazy!

Thanks for the opportunity!

Amy said...

Your quilt was fantabulous! Love it! My favorite size quilt is probably a lap quilt. We have small dogs (mini dachshunds) so if we have larger quilts in the family room the dogs get buried under them. With lap quilts we can have several on the couch and chairs, change them seasonally, etc. If you're really cold -- add another one!

Barbara Pavlas said...

I prefer making larger size quilts. Thanks for the giveaway

herky907 said...

I like bed quilts, small quilts and stuff in between. After making a big quilt, it's fun to switch to small.

Tracey said...

Love all sizes

Moneik said...

My favorite size is a throw or large baby quilt. I can make them quickly and finish them without getting bored or distracted.I love to have finished quilts and not just UFO's (although I have plenty of those too).

I love your big block quilt & plan to make one for a throw or to have in the car for unplanned picnics. I like to make small quilts, but end up making twin & queen size a lot for family members.

CynthiaT59 said...

I like useful quilts. So far I have made over-sized lap quilts. The kids are tall and want to be covered up.

I love to make lap quilts! They are the perfect size to snuggle under.

Love that in quilting one can do it, "my way, my size." The picnic quilt is perfect! I really don't have a favorite "size" quilt but I am more and more drawn to "square" quilts... Also, love the large flying geese and using that beautiful fabric as the center showcase. Sometimes, it is just soooo hard to cut up fabrics.
Thanks for the fun!

I'm glad to have found your blog; I can finally tell you how much I love your fabric designs!! LOVE THEM!!!

I love making quilts for my husband and son to wrap up in while they're watching TV!

Thanks for the giveaway!

Debbie said...

I like to make baby size quilts because I rotate my quilts on the wall for an ever changing show.

Lynda said...

I will make anything smaller than a queen size quilt - it is a matter of economics. I made an oversized King quilt for my son and it cost me $200 to have it quilted in a basic edge to edge pattern - and I was tired of the quilt when I finished - not fun.

Duchess Lucy said...

I make art quilts, so size?...well they are just as big or small as they need to be! I adore the Josephine line, love those rich browns and reds together.

Ellie Guhl said...

I love baby quilts because they are fast to piece and I can quilt them on my home machine! Plus, they are so much fun to give to the new moms!!! Ellie at sguhl@att.net

Susan Smith said...

I tend to do better at throw size quilts (getting them actually finished!)However, larger quilts are more useful around our house. My boys are tall and they want throw quilts to be long enough to cover them up! So I really need to make queen size quilts. I'm hand-quilting one right now for my son's college graduation gift---almost a year late!

I love making lap size!

Verna A. said...

I like the baby quilt size best--I can finish them quicker. Love the big block.

Your story is too funny.....what a beautiful picnic quilt! As a new quilter I haven't made any big quilts yet so my favorite size is a lap quilt. Thank you for sharing! anglanouette at gmail dot com

I like to make a lap size quilt or smaller because it is easier for me to machine quilt that size - anything larger and I have to send it out. Thanks for the chance to win!

Love your picnic quilt! And it could even be finished quickly enough to use for a picnic in Minnesota before the weather turns too cold.

My favorite size is baby size because I can FMQ it on my home machine.

I always start of small and end up huge. And that's why I have a stack of unquilted tops!

Patti said...

That is a hard question - I like and make them all! Right now I'm working on several large quilts.

Bolts and Bobbins said...

I like lap quilts but because of all the cute fabrics out now, I also like baby quilts. Thanks for the pattern and the opportunity to be in the draw.

My favorite size of quilt to make is lap size; for a fabriholic like me I can make more quilts if they are lap quilts vs double or queen.

I love to make lap quilts. I get done a lot faster that way!

My favorite size quilt to make is actually a wallhanging. I love to be able to display a quilt on the wall to look at and admire!!

Big blocks make for quick quilts!!! I make mostly lap, wall quilts and runners these days. I do have a bed quilt for our bed in the making now though. I love bigger focal prints with smaller prints and tone on tones. most of your fabric lines are so very pretty and romantic! Saw some FG decor fabrics OMG!

I prefer to make queen sized quilts for useability but I do enjoy making wall hangings too depending on the fabrics and pattern. I am working on a red/white quilt,a 3 Sisters Sampler quilt along with a pheasant wall hanging.

My favorite size is a lap quilt or a wall quilt - your big block would work in either. Love all the French General fabrics!

I do love large blocks that show off great prints, and yours would definitely do that. Love your designs! Thanks.

The size of your block for an entire quilt is a good idea--I'll use it for a baby quilt. News of a little girl coming soon inspires me to quilt.

Thanks for the beautiful French General designs!!

I like to make wall sized quilts. My attention span is so short, so big quilts are out of the question.

My favorite size is lap...but also doll sized! The new pattern will be great for perfecting those pesky flying geese...and I love the big block picnic blanket! Thanks for sharing with us all!

My favorite size is a baby quilt because it is usually fast. ILOVE the quick gratification I get from seeing a completed quilt.

my favorite size to quilt is one large enough to cover the top of our queen mattress. in our case, at least a 60x60 but more around a 70". this way, it's large enough to use on top of the bed, but not too large to use lying around the couch.

I seem to have migrated to lap quilts, although I have been making a few baby quilts lately.

My favorite size is lap. Faster and still big enough to wrap up in to watch TV or do handwork, or even around shoulders at the machine if into the energy saving mode :)

My favorite size quilt to make and to give is baby or lap size. I've made a few king and queen size but, they're just to big for me to quilt on my DSM. Size does matter, I'm 4 11 I think good things come in small packages. I love your BIG block quilt it's the perfect size for so many things. ;->

My favorite size quilts to make would be lap quilts or wall hangings. Any larger is difficult for me to manage in my small work space. Your new fabric line is beautiful!

Ann said...

I like to alternate between small projects (laps, table toppers, hangings) and bed-size quilts. It's satisfying to have some quick finishes in between the monster projects.

Your quilt may be my next reading quilt. I love the simplicity! I love baby quilts. I love knowing that while baby is being rocked, my gift may be wrapped around baby and mom (or dad) in the middle of the night.

JoyceLM said...

I prefer making lap quilts, though one day I hope to make a queen size quilt for our bed. Thanks for the pattern & the giveaway.

My favorite size would be a lap quilt. Not too big where I can't handle it in the sewing machine but big enough to wrap around a body! Thanks for a chance to win :)

Wall quilts are my favorite right now, but I've enjoyed making quilts of all sizes. I like the idea of a huge block quilt.
