Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Today is the kick-off day for the Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway!  This has been a long time coming...and I'm excited to start the blog hop on day one, along with Edyta of Laundry Basket Quilts and Brigitte of Zen Chic!

Our latest collection for Fall 2013, Josephine, is coming soon!  Filled with our deep reds and pinks, rich browns, and naturals, the Josephine Collection is inspired by Napoleon's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais.  The first Empress of France was a lover of all things botanical and kept a rose garden at Chateau de Malmaison that rivaled the best English gardens of the time.  For our Josephine Collection, we included beautiful old florals as well as fantasy florals and small petite prints - perfect for mixing into a quilt!

Last Spring,  Lissa Alexander, Moda's master marketing gal, asked each of the Moda designers to chose a block to create.  At the Moda Schoolhouse, we each stood up and presented our block, along with a story of how the block fit into the chosen theme: Size Matters.  I took the theme quite literally...I made my block bigger....

and better.....

When I stood up to present my block, I told everyone I really thought that the point of the project was to make our block bigger - and better!  Little did I realize that everyone else had a block that was actually useable...6x6, 8x8 or even 12x12.  Oh well, my block was designed to be turned into a portable picnic blanket - complete with tie - so you can wear it over your shoulder as you walk to your perfect spot to picnic!  That's Molly's Stella up there sitting on the blanket...she's always ready to picnic!

Download Instructions For Our Block Here

We've also designed a beautiful, large Flying Geese inspired quilt with our new collection, Josephine.  Designed by myself and JZ, sewn by the talented Penny Tucker, and quilted by Cheryl Yamamoto...this quilt, as well as all of our quilts, is truly a team effort.  As many of you know, designing quilts has not come easy to me...but this quilt seemed to flow...I loved the combination of the classic style and the ability to show off the fabric at the same time.

Order the Josephine Quilt Pattern Here

Over the years six years of designing fabric for Moda, I have learned that size really does matter!  Once I settle on a theme for a collection, I go digging in my fabric archives for inspiration.  I look for a couple of large scale prints, a few mediums and a handful of small, or ditsy prints.  Being fairly new to the quilt business, I have learned how important the variety of scale is.  Too many large prints and there is not enough depth or diversity - too many small prints and the design of the quilt can begin to lose itself.  I am so thankful for friends and teachers that have helped me learn this along the way....it's been an important tool for me while designing collections and the accompanying quilts.

Thanks to Moda, I have a handful of giveaways to accompany this blog hop, as well as some cute Josephine Hankies, so go ahead and leave me a comment about your favorite size quilt to sew...is it a lap quilt, a baby quilt or something larger?  Sofia will choose the lucky winners within the week and we will send out some prizes! Thanks for playing along and hope to see some of you in Houston!

I'm a big fan of throw size quilts. Not to light not to heavy and just right for snuggling up under!

My favorite quilt sizes to sew are probably Minis, Baby and Lap, in that order.
I have made some lrger ones, but I really like the satisfaction of finishing quicker.

I recently finished a beginner quilting class and I love quilting! I had always wanted to make a quilt, but didn't really know where to start. Now I'm IN! I guess baby quilts are my favorite size right now as I have two baby quilts to make for my soon to be grand niece/nephews. I also plan to donate youth quilts to charity so small is good for me right now. I love Moda fabrics and really appreciate the info on the website. I just found your blog today through the website. Great! :)

I like all sizes! Bed quilts really make you feel like you've accomplished something when they're done because they're so large but they are sometimes a bit overwhelming and by the time I'm to the binding I just want them DONE. Smaller quilts and projects can be finished quickly and I don't get tired of them before the finishing touches are done.

Quite a nice quilt!

Quite a nice quilt!

I giggled when I saw the size of block you made. I would have done the same thing. I do like the larger simpler block for a great pic-nic blanket...very fun.

I like to make quilts to keep warm on the sofa although I make all sizes. Perhaps 60 x 72 is my favorite.

Smiles,
Kelly

My favorite size to sew is the lap quilt. I can piece it quickly enough to not become bored and quilting is manageable with my sewing machine.

Marie Chat said...

Since I retired a couple of years ago, I have been determined to make all my 4 children bed quilts (as well as myself!), so it seems queen size is the favorite. I'll 'downsize' soon!! Love Josephine!

I like bed size quilts. I like to walk into a bed room and see a beautiful quilt on a bed.

My favorite size quilt to sew is any quilt LOL!! I'm working on lots of small ones now, but I'm starting to lean towards the larger ones too.......

Baby quilts are my favorite size.

Karen O said...

I love making baby size quilts or smaller.

AnnaVallance said...

At the moment I am into making baby quilts; a great size to hand quilt. Thank you for the giveaway!

Pam said...

My favorite size quilt to make is whatever I am working on at the moment. I like small quilts because you get to see the finished product fast and I like massive quilts because you have them so much longer.

Swedish Scrapper said...

I love making mini quilts, but that is only because I'm chicken to quilt something larger. I actually love lap quilts too, and that picnic block" is wonderful. Also love your designs with the whole cloth center and flying geese around the edges. So rich and autumnal!

I love all sizes. I currently am making a lot of baby quilts and love the ease of the size and the fun it is. Thank you for all your great patterns and books.

Melissa said...

I have never finished a quilt so, I have no idea!!

Gloria said...

I am making smaller quilts now as every bed in the house has at least two and the spare bed has at least five.

diane said...

I like lap quilts. Big enough to take some time but not too big that I can't shove it thru my home machine to quilt.

Unknown said...

I prefer to make bed quilts. Mainly queen size. You only have so many walls for wallhangings.

Brenda K said...

Lap quilts or smaller are more do-able for me, and are used by the family to keep them warm in the wintertime. I like that.

Unknown said...

I like to make fairly big quilts, and always bigger then the normal size. Baby quilts are at least 40" etc.

~Kris~ said...

I usually make quilts between doll size and lap size so I can quilt them on my machine. I love your picnic quilt.

Goody Family said...

Love BIG quilts, my family in particular like quilts that are big enough to be completely covered and snuggled in. :)

Cindy A. said...

I like making small quilts, as in miniatures or doll quilts. I tend to have Quilter's ADD and can't make lots of the same block without getting bored and ending up with yet another UFO. I love this group and would love to win one of those hankies. Too cute!

Gretchen said...

Thanks for the chance at the great giveaway! I love making lap size quilts. They make great gifts and are perfect to have around the house.

Barbe said...

right now i am still gaining confidence so i like lap and baby quilts, my easier to machine quilt, i have a king size quilt top already to go, i'm just working up to it.

Fabulous quilt! Love the size. I am making baby blankets and I love them.

Jo Ann said...

Thank you for a chance to win this fabric line. Love the fabric.

I generally make an oversize twin, I don't know why, I think it's because I lay the squares on my queen bed and anything else looks too small. I loved your square at quilt market, that was a fun class. Thanks.

Cynthia H. said...

Lap quilts are nice as I can move onto the next project!

Paula said...

Love the big block!

KarenQ said...

Lap quilt are my favorite as I seem to get much more use from them.

Any chance we'll get the dimensions to make our own Picnic Quilt? :)

I like making the quilt size I am making. Lap quilts are fun because they are finished soon and I can get on to the next project.

MY favorite size quilt to make would be lap size. Those I know will get finished. Thanks, Patty

Kate R said...

Wow, what a fantastic big block! I love it! I enjoy making cot quilts or lap quilts, just because they're quick so I'm more likely to finish them :)

Most quilts that I make are lap quilts. They are usually given to someone who has cancer or fighting an illness.
Lap quilts are more affordable.
Thank you for sharing.

Joann said...

I like all sizes of quilts ...obviously, but there is something special about a smaller quilt that you can pick up and cuddle!

At this time in my life, my favorite quilt to make are baby ones, due to the fact that we have had 5 great granddaughters in the past 5 years, so between baby showers and baby gifts, I have been very busy, but a very enjoyable busy.

Kerri said...

Did some man at Moda come up with this theme? LOL!
I am a brand new quilter and am starting on a pillow to teach myself piecing without getting overwhelmed.

Flower 4040 said...

Wow, I had to really think about this. I LOVE to make king sized quilts for my bed but find the length of time they take to be a bit tough to handle. So I guess I'm gonna say throw size. I love using new fabric and the throw size is done quick enough to continually feed my need for variety.

ruth ann said...

The baby quilt is such an item to cherish....easier to hand quilt, too!

Grandmasewnsew said...

I love lap size quilts and have been trying to make a larger quilt but I just love the lap size so much and love to use them.

Trisch said...

My favorite size so far is a lap quilt. I think mostly because I can easily lay it out on my kitchen floor to baste. I am going to be brave and make one for my king size bed, not sure where in the world I will lay that out! Thanks for the giveaway!

Lizzie and Caenaan said...

The only quilt I have finished so far is a baby quilt, so I would have to say that is my favorite! Although I took a huge leap and am making a queen sized one now, and making my own pattern to boot! Eek!

mongghon said...

I love huge quilts. The bigger the better! So my "lap" quilts are twin sized. Thanks for sharing!

My favorite quilt size is KING SIZE, because size does matter!!!

Linda Enneking said...

I prefer to make lap size quilts because I have to quilt them on my sewing machine, anything larger is more than I want to attempt.

When I make a quilt, I like to make a queen-size quilt since that is what fits my bed. I definitely like to make a quilt that is large enough to use and not just hang on a wall.

I love twin sizes so it's big enough to wrap myself in!

Size does matter, and sometimes I get carried away. Several years ago, I was making a baby quilt for a special friend's new baby. I loved making the pattern so much that it turned into a large Twin-sized quilt -- another couple of inches on the borders, and it would have been a queen! The quilt turned out awesome! I don't know that I have a "favorite" size. I just LOVE quilting!

irises71 said...

I like lap size because they make great gifts.

Deborah said...

Definitely a lap quilt! Big enough for me and small enough to not take an eternity to finish!
