Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Today is the kick-off day for the Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway!  This has been a long time coming...and I'm excited to start the blog hop on day one, along with Edyta of Laundry Basket Quilts and Brigitte of Zen Chic!

Our latest collection for Fall 2013, Josephine, is coming soon!  Filled with our deep reds and pinks, rich browns, and naturals, the Josephine Collection is inspired by Napoleon's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais.  The first Empress of France was a lover of all things botanical and kept a rose garden at Chateau de Malmaison that rivaled the best English gardens of the time.  For our Josephine Collection, we included beautiful old florals as well as fantasy florals and small petite prints - perfect for mixing into a quilt!

Last Spring,  Lissa Alexander, Moda's master marketing gal, asked each of the Moda designers to chose a block to create.  At the Moda Schoolhouse, we each stood up and presented our block, along with a story of how the block fit into the chosen theme: Size Matters.  I took the theme quite literally...I made my block bigger....

and better.....

When I stood up to present my block, I told everyone I really thought that the point of the project was to make our block bigger - and better!  Little did I realize that everyone else had a block that was actually useable...6x6, 8x8 or even 12x12.  Oh well, my block was designed to be turned into a portable picnic blanket - complete with tie - so you can wear it over your shoulder as you walk to your perfect spot to picnic!  That's Molly's Stella up there sitting on the blanket...she's always ready to picnic!

Download Instructions For Our Block Here

We've also designed a beautiful, large Flying Geese inspired quilt with our new collection, Josephine.  Designed by myself and JZ, sewn by the talented Penny Tucker, and quilted by Cheryl Yamamoto...this quilt, as well as all of our quilts, is truly a team effort.  As many of you know, designing quilts has not come easy to me...but this quilt seemed to flow...I loved the combination of the classic style and the ability to show off the fabric at the same time.

Order the Josephine Quilt Pattern Here

Over the years six years of designing fabric for Moda, I have learned that size really does matter!  Once I settle on a theme for a collection, I go digging in my fabric archives for inspiration.  I look for a couple of large scale prints, a few mediums and a handful of small, or ditsy prints.  Being fairly new to the quilt business, I have learned how important the variety of scale is.  Too many large prints and there is not enough depth or diversity - too many small prints and the design of the quilt can begin to lose itself.  I am so thankful for friends and teachers that have helped me learn this along the way....it's been an important tool for me while designing collections and the accompanying quilts.

Thanks to Moda, I have a handful of giveaways to accompany this blog hop, as well as some cute Josephine Hankies, so go ahead and leave me a comment about your favorite size quilt to sew...is it a lap quilt, a baby quilt or something larger?  Sofia will choose the lucky winners within the week and we will send out some prizes! Thanks for playing along and hope to see some of you in Houston!

I love the BIG BLOCK idea - many possibilities come to mind. My favorite size quilt (to make) is a throw/lap.

I enjoy making any size.I am happy as long as I am sewing!

I love doing lap size quilts with small pieces and prints!

I love tiny little quilts but don't have the eyes and patience for them anymore, so I try to collect them when I find them or even just old unfinished squares - those have a story to tell.

Your big block picnic quilt is so fun! I'm excited to make one:) I love your fabrics-they speak to my soul. Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks for the chance for the giveaway.

I simply love French General fabric! Currently, I'm sewing a Queen-size quilt for a retiring co-worker who saw Gerri Robinson's pattern "Pinwheel Panache" using the French General fabrics. I changed Gerri's pattern from 9" squares to 12" squares and I'm using the diamonds of the Lemoyne Star instead of the half square triangles (the set in seams are a bit of a challenge). I can hardly wait for her new book to come out!

Kathy said...

My favorite size quilt is a lap quilt because they are easy enough to manage on my home machine so I don't have to send them out to my longarm quilter.

chrystie sue said...

Love your big block! If I make one of these I might actually finish the quilt. My favorite size quilt to make is a lap size (I know my sewing limits)...but I love to wrap up in the biggest quilt I can find!

I prefer making wall hangings or lap quilts. I have enough bed size quilts and I like changing my wall hangings to fit the changing seasons. Thanks for the chance to win.

My favorite size quilt to make varies from my collage greeting cards at 5" X 9" to table runners to display quilts at 45" square. These sizes are manageable for machine quilting and embellishing.

I REALLY do love working on larger sized quilts. But time constraints leave me with little time for anything much bigger then throws!

Deb said...

Lap size or bigger for me. I don't make many wall hangings or smaller quilts, unless it's a baby quilt and then it's as a gift. Thanks!

Kathryn said...

My favorite size quilt these days is a good size for snuggling under and napping. They get used a lot.

Sharon said...

I've been on a large quilt kick lately....need to take a break from that soon and make some smaller ones!

Beth said...

Baby quilts or lap size are my favorites. Just finished a king size one but it way a bit difficult to handle. Love your new pattern

supersara20 said...

I love the oversized block! I like to make big quilts because I want to be able to snuggle in them and not have my toes peek out of the end.

SueJean said...

I love all quilt sizes. The big ones are so beautiful on the beds but it is also nice to make the smaller ones because you finish quicker. I love wall hangings, candlemats, baby size and king size. They are all great. Love your fabric collections, keep up the good work.

Judy Maggio said...

Now I want to try a Big block quilt. I have a four block quilt started, but not a one block quilt. My favorite quilts are baby quilts...because they're small. I seem to have problems finishing quilts. I can see the new quilt in my mind before the last five quilts are complete. I don't think I have ADHD, but can I use that as an excuse?

Rose Marie said...

I'm making a few red/white quilts right now and your fabrics will make a perfect quilt to go along with them. Most of my quilts are queen size; but lately, large lap size quilts are being made (we are a tall family).

carolg said...

I'm finding I like littler and littler quilts - in a busy life, it's something accomplished. Thank you for the giveaway!

Kay said...

Of course size matters, the bigger the stash pile the better. I particularly like to make baby quilts as I know they will always be loved. My children are all teenagers now but still like to have their baby quilts at the end of their beds. Te quilts were made by a friend and each have their name embroidered on them. Thank you for a lovely giveaway too.

Wow! That is definitely a big block. My favourite size for a quilt is lap sized. It always looks great, and doesn't take too long to make up and quilt.

Mary said...

Really, I have to say, my favorite size quilt is usually the one I'm working on at the moment. Wall quilts seem to be the favorite currently, but I have a couple bed sized planned. Love the Josephine fabric line--so pretty

My favorite size is a nice big one large enough to wrap up in. But I mostly have finished smaller wall size ones myself. Love the idea of the picnic blanket, thanks for sharing the pattern.

Qltr89 said...

I am a hand quilter; therefore, the smaller the quilt as in lap-size the faster I can finish and give as a gift. So lap-size quilts are my favorite size.

I used to love lap quilts...but as my sewing skills have improved (and I'm less nervous about quilting the larger quilts), my favorite size quilt to make has grown to double size!!!

I like a large lap size quilt best. I find bigger ones too heavy, harder to use, and harder to store. Lap sized quilts are great snugglers.

I guess I usually make them either throw sized or to fit the top of a full sized bed.

As much as I love a beautiful large quilt, the size I generally make is lap-size, much more achievable to acutally finish! So good to see your lovely big block/quilt, it is stunning in it's simplicity. Loving the new fabric line too...

This is a hard one. I can handle machine quilting runners and wallhangings myself, so then I feel I did the whole thing. But we have lots of lap quilts. My kids would like them all to be twin size because they are tall and can totally wrap themselves in them when watching TV.

Violet said...

Hmmm... I like to make lap quilts, but I'm always amazed by king-sized quilts. The detail and the hard work that goes into them is truly inspiring. Someday I'll make one for myself, too!

Plus I have a very basic sewing machine and machine quilting is too hard on anything larger than the smaller quilts. :)

My favorite quilt lately has actually been receiving blankets, I have made 4 in the last 2 months, too many babies, hahaha! I really love the idea of a one block picnic blanket, I think it's inspired. Thank you for sharing and for being such a fantastic designer, I love what you've come out with!

I like all sizes, from table mats, wall hangings and throws. I have made several twins and one king size.
Lately I buy lots of kits which are usually on the larger size. I love your fabrics and have two of your kits waiting patiently to be started. Thanks for the pattern and the chance to win the give away.

I tend to like making quilts on the smaller size. Enjoyed hearing the back story on your new collection. I do like your block in the large size.

I like twin size, it's a good snuggler size for when lying about on the sofa reading a book. Love your block, boy it indeed is BIG! LOL!

I love your big block. And especially how you turned it into a picnic blanket. So clever. I am still fairly new to quilting so I love making baby quilts. Especially since we see to be having a rash of new great nephews and nieces lately. So fun.

I love your big block! What a fun interpretation of the theme!

My favorite size? I don't have one but I almost always make bed quilts and most are queen or larger. My bed is a king and I always use it to layout quilts (no design wall room here I have design bed). So, I tend to fill the spaces with more blocks! Thank you for the chance to win!

Loving red and especially reds with a vintage French flare I am hooked on French General designs and always look forward to the next collection. My philosophy has always been "some is good, more is better",laughter..family..friends..
so I tend to make larger usable quilts that can be grown into or cuddled under.

I think my favorite size is a lap. Big enough to play with, small enough to get done in a reasonable amount of time.

I love your block! It's wonderful.

My favorite size to make is wallhanging or smaller. I am very successful in making small items, but a big one is very daunting for me. Interesting comments on large and small prints in putting together a collection. Thanks for sharing!

I have made all sizes, but I think wall hanging is my favorite. I love the BIG block idea. One block and done!! I love the colors, no quilt is complete without Red..... A yoyo....and possibly ric rac..........thanks for the opportunity to win a gift and the free block!!!!

I have to say, I would probably have come to the meeting with a really big block, too, since it doesn't seem it was made completely clear. =) As for favorite size, I don't think I have one. If I'm making a bed quilt I usually make double or queen because that's what most people have. I make a lot of lap throws, and a number of baby quilts, but it's all in how much fabric I have and what the need is. Thanks for the chance to win something. It's always fun!

All of my Quilts seem to end up approx. twin size, not always planned that way thou.

I am so unimaginative that I never change the size of a quilt from what the designer planned. One good thing about that is that you have many different size quilts...if only I would finish one completely!

I like the huge pattern of your churn dash.

Beth J. Beal said...

I prefer a lap quilt because I can more easily complete it and get a better sense of accomplishment about my projects.

My favorite size quilt would be a lap quilt or bigger, because I want them to be used. I should do smaller sizes so that I would finish more!

Thank you for the large block. I am going to try it your way. After all a blog hop is a learning experience.

I love the literal take on the block and the idea of such a great quilt made from it. I think I will use the pattern for baby quilts I do for our charity bee. Thanks for the chance.

My favorite size of quilt is a lap size. I want my quilts to be used and loved by the people they belong too. Maybe not abused.
