Today is the kick-off day for the Moda Size Matters Blog Hop and Giveaway! This has been a long time coming...and I'm excited to start the blog hop on day one, along with Edyta of Laundry Basket Quilts and Brigitte of Zen Chic!
Our latest collection for Fall 2013, Josephine, is coming soon! Filled with our deep reds and pinks, rich browns, and naturals, the Josephine Collection is inspired by Napoleon's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais. The first Empress of France was a lover of all things botanical and kept a rose garden at Chateau de Malmaison that rivaled the best English gardens of the time. For our Josephine Collection, we included beautiful old florals as well as fantasy florals and small petite prints - perfect for mixing into a quilt!
Last Spring, Lissa Alexander, Moda's master marketing gal, asked each of the Moda designers to chose a block to create. At the Moda Schoolhouse, we each stood up and presented our block, along with a story of how the block fit into the chosen theme: Size Matters. I took the theme quite literally...I made my block bigger....
and better.....
When I stood up to present my block, I told everyone I really thought that the point of the project was to make our block bigger - and better! Little did I realize that everyone else had a block that was actually useable...6x6, 8x8 or even 12x12. Oh well, my block was designed to be turned into a portable picnic blanket - complete with tie - so you can wear it over your shoulder as you walk to your perfect spot to picnic! That's Molly's Stella up there sitting on the blanket...she's always ready to picnic!
We've also designed a beautiful, large Flying Geese inspired quilt with our new collection, Josephine. Designed by myself and JZ, sewn by the talented Penny Tucker, and quilted by Cheryl Yamamoto...this quilt, as well as all of our quilts, is truly a team effort. As many of you know, designing quilts has not come easy to me...but this quilt seemed to flow...I loved the combination of the classic style and the ability to show off the fabric at the same time.

Over the years six years of designing fabric for Moda, I have learned that size really does matter! Once I settle on a theme for a collection, I go digging in my fabric archives for inspiration. I look for a couple of large scale prints, a few mediums and a handful of small, or ditsy prints. Being fairly new to the quilt business, I have learned how important the variety of scale is. Too many large prints and there is not enough depth or diversity - too many small prints and the design of the quilt can begin to lose itself. I am so thankful for friends and teachers that have helped me learn this along the way....it's been an important tool for me while designing collections and the accompanying quilts.

I'm better at finishing lap size quilts if I'm hand quilting. But I like bigger quilts in general.

I honestly don't have a favorite size - I like lap quilts and bed sized quilts. In fact, I usually tend to go towards the full size quilts. I guess I like them the bigger the better. Love your block too and new fabric line.

I guess my favorite size is basically a twin, but I call them 'couch quilts'. Perfect for the Sunday afternoon paper, football game and snooze on the couch.

I make quilts in all sizes - from preemie quilts up to queen size. I don't make king size quilts, nope, not happening.
I enjoy making different sizes of quilts. I like wall hangings for small spaces, lap quilts to cuddle under while reading and lovely large bed quilts to sleep under.

I've always made huge quilts but as I get colder and my husband gets warmer I find I like a smaller, lap or couch size that I can layer on top of just my side of the bed at night :)

Love your picnic quilt block. My favorite quilt size is 60" x 60" as I always have a quilt that size hanging on my living room wall. They get changed for the seasons or events.
I tend to make a lot of table toppers, but I still get the most satisfaction from finishing bed-size quilts.

My favorite size tends to be around 34 - 36" square -- a table top size. I have a bookcase built by my husband with a spot for displaying that size of quilt.

I love quilts that I can put on my bed and use - our wall space is limited and I think quilts looks just wonderful, like beautiful artwork, when they are displayed on a bed.

I try to have the size of my quilt be large enough to wrap the recipient. And since I have some large friends and family (many over 6'6'") I have some work on my hands. Lots of love to stitch.
I do like your idea of large. I need to keep it in mind when making a baby quilt for my nieces, I have lots of them. The one large block would be a fun way to go.
I love making quilts that are more usable best, single bed size and up, you definitely feel more proud of them, right up until I get to quilting them, and then I remember all the back ache involved with trying to quilt something that heavy. So as I'm right in the middle of quilting a large quilt at the mo, I would say cot sized all the way.

My favorite is twin size. I have to get some "Josephine"! It's my middle name and my mothers name.
I am fairly new to quilting and have recently discovered French General and have fallen totally in love with your fabric collections. I love the rich colors and beautiful prints. I just wish I would have started quilting a few years back and could get past collections. I am looking forward to Josephine, just ordered a bundle from FQS, yeah! I like making bigger quilts that more than one person can snuggle in.

Your big block picnic quilt is gorgeous! I absolutely love it. What size quilt to I like to sew most? It's a toss-up between baby quilts and lap quilts. I love to give a personal lap quilt, but there is just something that captures my heart about baby fabrics.

Your quilt was fantabulous! Love it! My favorite size quilt is probably a lap quilt. We have small dogs (mini dachshunds) so if we have larger quilts in the family room the dogs get buried under them. With lap quilts we can have several on the couch and chairs, change them seasonally, etc. If you're really cold -- add another one!

Love that in quilting one can do it, "my way, my size." The picnic quilt is perfect! I really don't have a favorite "size" quilt but I am more and more drawn to "square" quilts... Also, love the large flying geese and using that beautiful fabric as the center showcase. Sometimes, it is just soooo hard to cut up fabrics.

I like to make baby size quilts because I rotate my quilts on the wall for an ever changing show.
I will make anything smaller than a queen size quilt - it is a matter of economics. I made an oversized King quilt for my son and it cost me $200 to have it quilted in a basic edge to edge pattern - and I was tired of the quilt when I finished - not fun.
I make art quilts, so size?...well they are just as big or small as they need to be! I adore the Josephine line, love those rich browns and reds together.

I tend to do better at throw size quilts (getting them actually finished!)However, larger quilts are more useful around our house. My boys are tall and they want throw quilts to be long enough to cover them up! So I really need to make queen size quilts. I'm hand-quilting one right now for my son's college graduation gift---almost a year late!

I've been counting the days until Josephine is available! I love this line. I used to just love lap quilts but now I have two, no three, favorite sizes - doll, baby, and lap sizes are all favorites now that I have grandchildren.

Any size is fine with me, if I like the quilt. Most of what I make are 50"x60" for Quilts of Honor...a great size for Vets and wounded back from the battlefield. We call them "quilted hugs of gratitude". And, yes,Quilts of Honor can always use more quilts.

All the way with bed sized quilts for me. I may not get as many made but love each and every one of them. Hand stitched, hand quilted although I do have an online machine quilting class to take soon, maybe that will help me along!

For some reason even if I start off making a lap size quilt I keep adding to it and it ends up being about 50X70, so that's must be my favorite. It's interesting to consider your points about the print sizes and how they need to work together.

Big blocks make for quick quilts!!! I make mostly lap, wall quilts and runners these days. I do have a bed quilt for our bed in the making now though. I love bigger focal prints with smaller prints and tone on tones. most of your fabric lines are so very pretty and romantic! Saw some FG decor fabrics OMG!

I prefer to make queen sized quilts for useability but I do enjoy making wall hangings too depending on the fabrics and pattern. I am working on a red/white quilt,a 3 Sisters Sampler quilt along with a pheasant wall hanging.
My favorite size is a lap quilt or a wall quilt - your big block would work in either. Love all the French General fabrics!

The size of your block for an entire quilt is a good idea--I'll use it for a baby quilt. News of a little girl coming soon inspires me to quilt.

I like to make wall sized quilts. My attention span is so short, so big quilts are out of the question.
My favorite size is lap...but also doll sized! The new pattern will be great for perfecting those pesky flying geese...and I love the big block picnic blanket! Thanks for sharing with us all!
My favorite size is a baby quilt because it is usually fast. ILOVE the quick gratification I get from seeing a completed quilt.
my favorite size to quilt is one large enough to cover the top of our queen mattress. in our case, at least a 60x60 but more around a 70". this way, it's large enough to use on top of the bed, but not too large to use lying around the couch.
I seem to have migrated to lap quilts, although I have been making a few baby quilts lately.
I love your French garden inspired fabrics! The more the merrier, therefore I would prefer to make a larger quilt with your fabrics!

I love the Flying Geese Quilt and the fabrics used for it. My favorite size for quilts is a lap or double size.
My favorite size is lap. Faster and still big enough to wrap up in to watch TV or do handwork, or even around shoulders at the machine if into the energy saving mode :)
My favorite size is lap quilt or a baby quilt . . . I love to celebrate the birth of a baby with a quilt and love lap sized quilts to snuggle while watching TV.

My favorite size quilt to make and to give is baby or lap size. I've made a few king and queen size but, they're just to big for me to quilt on my DSM. Size does matter, I'm 4 11 I think good things come in small packages. I love your BIG block quilt it's the perfect size for so many things. ;->

I've made so many bed size quilts that now I really enjoy baby quilts or table quilts to give as gifts.
I like lap quilts because they are perfect for gift giving. Everyone can use a quilt to snuggle up with!

I like to alternate between small projects (laps, table toppers, hangings) and bed-size quilts. It's satisfying to have some quick finishes in between the monster projects.
Your quilt may be my next reading quilt. I love the simplicity! I love baby quilts. I love knowing that while baby is being rocked, my gift may be wrapped around baby and mom (or dad) in the middle of the night.

Wall quilts are my favorite right now, but I've enjoyed making quilts of all sizes. I like the idea of a huge block quilt.
